What does the name pokey mean?

People always ask me what Pokey means. If you read our blog post about how Pokey got her name, you’ll see that I didn’t name her, so I don’t know exactly what she was named after. However, I’ve definitely spent some time thinking about it myself!

If you look up “Pokey” in the dictionary, you will see that Pokey is slang for “prison”. I think that’s hilarious because sometimes I feel like I’m a slave to Pokey and cater to her every need! Before I got Pokey, I was a normal functioning human being and member of society. Now I am a hand-feeder, ball thrower, constant toy picker-upper, tug-tug player, to name a few of my new responsibilities.

When I tell people that my dog’s name is Pokey, most people think that Poké, like a Poké bowl. Or they think that it’s “Pookie”. However based on the spelling of her name, I think most likely she was named after Pokey, from Gumby and Pokey :)

And while I really can’t know for certain - given Pokey’s rambunctious and exuberant personality, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was really named after Pokey from Gumpy and Pokey!
