In 2008, I saw a YouTube video of a Boston terrier named Max, who laughed when you tickled his tummy.
I didn’t even know what a Boston Terrier was before that. I had never really noticed them before that, but I became obsessed with this video and watched the funny faces, neck rolls and bulging eyes on repeat. I made everyone I knew watch the video too. Everyone became quite annoyed with me and my obsession with this dog. I knew that this was the dog I wanted.
I started buying BT cards and home goods, hoping that one day I would have my own funny faced, neck rolled tubby dumpling, but knowing it was a far-fetched dream. At the time I lived in New York and “work-life balance” was a mythical concept you heard of. I couldn’t have a dog with my insane work schedule and constant work travel.
